By installing a cleanout in the main PVC drain line of this old house, it allows you to easily inspect the sewer line to the street with a sewer camera. Without a cleanout, there is no proper access point in the basement where the main sewer exited the house.

Here’s how to get it done:

Locate the Main Drain Line
Identify the section of pipe before it exits the foundation wall or floor. Choose a straight run that allows space for cutting and installing the sanitary tee fitting.

Cut into the PVC Line
Shut off water use in the house. Use a PVC saw to cut into the main drain line where the cleanout will be installed.

Install the Sanitary Tee Fitting

• Dry-fit the 4" DWV Sanitary Tee into the cut section.

• Use PVC primer and cement to bond the fittings.

• Ensure the cleanout branch faces upward or at a slight angle for easy access.

Add the Female Adapter

• Cement the spigot x FIPT female adapter into the sanitary tee hub.

• This creates the threaded connection for the cleanout plug.

Thread in the Cleanout Plug

• Insert the MIPT cleanout plug and hand-tighten securely.

• Use thread sealant if needed to ensure a watertight fit.
