A 3/4 x 1/2 inch PVC female bushing (commonly called a reducer bushing) is an adapter used to step down the size of a PVC connection from 3/4-inch to 1/2-inch. It essentially acts as a plug that fits inside a larger fitting to create a smaller opening.

These are incredibly common in custom PVC construction, such as building lightweight mobility frames, sporting goals, or grid layouts, because they let you transition cleanly from a thicker structural spine (3/4") down to lighter, thinner 1/2" cross-bracing without adding extra bulk to the joints.

How the Connections Work

Unlike standard couplings that connect two pipes end-to-end, a bushing sits flush inside another fitting to save space.

  • The 3/4" Side (Outer): This is almost always a Spigot (Spig) end. It has the exact same outer diameter as a piece of 3/4" PVC pipe. Instead of connecting over a pipe, it is designed to be glued directly into a 3/4" female fitting, like a Tee, elbow, or cross.
  • The 1/2" Side (Inner): This is the Female receptacle bored through the center. It receives the 1/2" pipe or component.

Types of Female Ends

Depending on the specific part, the inner 1/2" female connection will be one of two types:

  1. Slip (Socket): A smooth interior. You permanently bond a standard 1/2" PVC pipe into it using PVC primer and cement.
  1. FPT / FIPT (Female Pipe Thread): A threaded interior (like the one in the image above). This is used when you need to screw in a 1/2" male threaded pipe, a hose adapter, or a caster wheel stem, rather than gluing it. Threaded connections require PTFE (Teflon) tape to create a watertight or secure mechanical seal.
