Customer Question:
Are 247Garden fabric pots made with polyester and polypropylene biodegradable? If so, how long does it take to break down?

247Garden's Answer from Cassidy:
This is a very frequent asked question for us. 247Garden fabric pots are made from a durable blend of polyester and polypropylene, which are synthetic fibers chosen for their strength, breathability, and reusability over many seasons. However, because they are petroleum-based materials, they are not biodegradable in the traditional sense — meaning they will not break down naturally into organic matter like compostable materials would.

Here’s what to know:

  • In soil or compost, these materials can take 20 to 100+ years to fully degrade, depending on exposure to sunlight, moisture, and microbes.
  • UV exposure and wear-and-tear will cause the material to weaken and break down into smaller particles over time, but this is a physical breakdown rather than full biodegradation.
  • 247Garden pots are BPA-free, lead-free, and designed for long-term reuse — helping reduce waste by replacing single-use plastic containers.

What you can do for sustainability:

  • Reuse the pots for multiple growing seasons — most customers get 3–5+ years depending on use and care.
  • Recycle responsibly: When you're done, check with local recycling programs to see if polypropylene (#5) and polyester materials are accepted.
  • Consider raised beds or permanent planters for long-term crops if minimizing synthetic use is a priority.

We’re constantly working to balance durability and sustainability. If fully biodegradable options become viable without sacrificing performance, we’ll explore them!
